I have always believed that children want to learn. Sometimes, they simply need someone who understands how they learn, where they are getting stuck, and what they need to learn next.
That belief is at the heart of my work as a literacy learning specialist, reading interventionist, and writing specialist.
I’m Angela Mejia-Moore, the founder of Readiscover Literacy Online Tutoring. For more than 25 years, I have worked with students and families throughout San Diego County as a classroom teacher, literacy specialist, writing teacher, literacy coach, curriculum developer, and interventionist.
Today, I bring that experience together through individualized, one-on-one online instruction in reading and writing. My work is grounded in the belief that effective instruction begins with understanding the learner—not simply following a curriculum or giving a student more practice.
My Story Began With My Own Experience as a Struggling Reader
My commitment to literacy is personal.
When I was in fourth grade, I experienced firsthand what it feels like to struggle with reading while watching other students move ahead. After transferring to a new school, I quickly realized that I was not reading at the same level as my classmates. I remember feeling embarrassed and inadequate, and I remember what it felt like to need help but not know how to ask for it.
That experience stayed with me.
Years later, when I became a teacher, I found myself drawn to the students who were struggling—the students who were bright and capable but had begun to believe that they simply weren’t “good at reading” or writing.
I understood something important: a child’s struggle with literacy does not define their ability to learn.
Often, there is a specific skill that has not yet been mastered. When we identify that skill and provide the right instruction, practice, encouragement, and time, students can begin to experience success.
That is the heart of Readiscover Literacy.
More Than 25 Years of Experience in Education
My professional experience has allowed me to see literacy from many different perspectives.
I have taught English Language Arts and English Language Development, worked as a literacy resource teacher, supported teachers through literacy coaching and professional development, developed curriculum, taught writing, and provided individualized intervention to students with a wide range of learning needs.
I hold a California teaching credential and a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Linguistic Studies, along with a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. My background in both education and writing has shaped the way I approach literacy: reading and writing are connected, and students need both the skills and the confidence to communicate their ideas effectively.
My years in the classroom also taught me that there is no single approach that works for every learner.
That is why I continue to expand my knowledge and training rather than relying only on what I learned years ago.
I Believe Good Teachers Never Stop Learning
One of the things I value most about being an educator is that there is always more to learn.
Throughout my career, I have continued to seek professional development and specialized training that can help me better understand the students I serve.
My Orton-Gillingham training was an important part of that professional growth. After working with students who continued to struggle with foundational reading skills, I wanted a more systematic framework for understanding the structure of language and explicitly teaching the skills students need.
Orton-Gillingham gave me another way to look beneath the surface of a reading struggle—to consider the specific skills a student has mastered, the skills that are developing, and the skills that need to be taught more explicitly.
I use this knowledge as part of a broader literacy approach rather than assuming that every student needs the same method. Depending on the learner, instruction may incorporate structured literacy, explicit phonics and decoding instruction, fluency practice, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and writing.

The Teacher Behind The Screen
Although Readiscover Literacy is now an online practice, my teaching philosophy has never changed. I want my students to feel known. I want to understand what makes reading difficult for them, what they already know, what they are capable of doing, and what is standing in the way of their progress. I pay attention to the small things—a student who begins self-correcting a word, a child who finally understands how to find evidence in a text, a student who organizes a paragraph independently for the first time, or the moment a reluctant reader realizes, “I can do this.” Those moments matter.
Academic growth is important, but so is the confidence that comes from experiencing success. My goal is not to make students dependent on tutoring. It is to give them strategies, skills, and understanding that they can carry into the classroom and eventually use independently.
Why I Created Readiscover Literacy
I created Readiscover Literacy because I wanted to provide the kind of individualized literacy support that I know can make a difference for students who are struggling.
I don’t believe in simply giving students more worksheets, more homework, or more time to practice a skill they don’t understand.
I believe in finding the gap, targeting the skill, and building the learner.
That means taking time to understand the student, identifying the instructional need, providing explicit teaching and guided practice, and adjusting instruction as the student grows.
My reading and writing services are designed to provide that individualized support in a one-on-one setting where students can ask questions, make mistakes, try again, and experience success without feeling embarrassed or compared to other students.
My Commitment to My Students
Every student who works with me is more than a reading level, a writing assignment, or a set of test scores.
They are a learner with strengths, challenges, interests, and their own story.
I want my students to leave our sessions not only knowing more but believing more in themselves as learners.
That is why I continue to learn. That is why I continue to refine my teaching. And that is why I remain deeply committed to individualized instruction.
After more than 25 years in education, I still get excited when a student makes a connection they couldn’t make before.
I still believe that every student can grow.
